Steady progress seen in Zhanjiang's grain production
During the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20) period, Zhanjiang has made steady progress in its grain production by implementing preferential policies, strengthening the construction of agricultural infrastructure, as well as applying new techniques and methods.
The total grain sown area maintained in Zhanjiang from 2016 to 2019 was more than four million mu (266,667 hectares). It was 4.08 million mu (272,000 hectares) in 2019, which is 3,000 mu more than that in 2015, an increase of 0.07 percent.
The city has been optimizing its rice planting layout in recent years, forming several main rice producing areas like the banks of the Jiuzhou River in Lianjiang, the Jianjiang Plain in Wuchuan, as well as the eastern and western coastal areas in Suixi.
The seeded area of rice in Zhanjiang in 2019 was 10,200 mu more than that in 2015, an increase of 0.3 percent. This year's early rice cultivated area in the city was 1.49 million mu, 77,100 mu more than that in 2019, a growth rate of 5.46 percent.
Zhanjiang's agricultural sector has been strengthening cooperation with universities and scientific research institutes, promoting the popularization and application of new technologies, as well as new grain varieties. Currently, the city has planted more than 400 improved varieties of crops, with an improved variety coverage rate of more than 95 percent.
To promote the construction of modern agricultural infrastructure, Zhanjiang has advanced a total of 49 projects to develop high-standard farmland, all of which have been completed and have entered the acceptance phase. The second batch of 31 projects of this kind is also in progress, with 29 projects having passed the expert evaluation.
As a result, the city's grain yield has reached a new high. Its total grain output in 2019 was 92,200 metric tons more than that in 2015, increasing by 6.69 percent and with an average annual growth rate of 1.63 percent.
In 2019, the grain yield per mu increased by 24 kilograms than that in 2015, with an average annual growth rate of 1.73 percent.
